Oliver Ames · Montpelier, Vermont

I make complicated things understandable.

I’m a photographer and communications strategist in Montpelier. I also write, make video, and build the websites and small systems behind the finished work.

The short version

I’ve spent my career explaining complicated work.

I’ve worked in aerospace, independent journalism, sustainable finance, science education, and organizational change. In each role, I translated complicated work for the public and helped run the systems that publish, measure, or support it.

My work moves between strategy and production. I can plan a content program, write and edit the material, photograph the people involved, build the page or workflow, and check the data after publication.

That range comes from a career spent inside small teams where the idea and execution rarely belong to separate people. I’m comfortable directing a shoot, troubleshooting a website, presenting a plan, or picking up the camera myself.

What I do

I do three kinds of work, and projects often use more than one.

01

Photography and video

I photograph people at work and produce documentary video.

02

Strategy and content

I find out what people are asking, then plan and write the content needed to answer them.

03

Practical technology

I work on websites, content migrations, accessibility, analytics, and small automations.

Experience

Here’s the longer version.

2026–present

Blue Cross Vermont

Brand and engagement

I work on brand communications, social content, community photography, and the production systems that support them.

2025–2026

BETA Technologies

Documentary producer

I produced Flight Paths, a documentary about how Emma found her way into Vermont aviation through a workforce partnership.

2022–2025

EastRise Credit Union

Digital Content Strategist

I led digital content through Vermont’s largest credit union merger, which created an organization serving 160,000+ members. The Taylor Hoar Racing series produced 248,491 views across 80 original pieces. A Wheels for Warmth post earned 65,906 views and 274 shares from a base of 25,000 followers.

2019–2022

VSECU

Social Media Specialist

I built the credit union's organic social program into a major audience channel. Annual impressions grew 319%, engagement grew 569%, and Facebook following grew 57% in one year. Organic social brought 33,000+ annual website users and exceeded mature email marketing by 58%. During COVID-19, one campaign reached 130,000+ Vermonters and raised $5,000, while I moderated 23,138 comments with response times under five minutes.

2018–2019

VTDigger

Membership Coordinator

I worked on analytics, email, campaign messages, and the donation experience for Vermont's nonprofit newsroom. A simpler donation path increased conversion by 137%, and segmented email campaigns helped increase new subscribers by 20% in four months.

2015–2018

Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium

Planetarium Director

I ran the only public planetarium in Vermont, managed programming and staff, helped implement a museum-wide point-of-sale system, and represented the museum in local media. I also helped lead the 2018 Guinness World Record event that brought 1,580 people together for an astronomy lesson.

2013–2015

Connecticut College

Social Media and Web Properties Intern

I developed content for college blogs and social channels, supported donor events, and contributed to a major website redesign. This was where digital communications became my job.

2012–2015

Independent consulting

Communications Consultant

I managed websites, content systems, social channels, and digital strategy for Vermont small businesses. That early work became the first version of Ames Consulting.

2013–2019

Stowe Mountain Resort

Alpine ski instructor

Teaching skiing made technical communication immediate. The explanation only worked if the person in front of me could use it on the next turn.
